BICEPS network

AkzoNobel, DSM and FrieslandCampina join forces with other shippers for a more sustainable shipping industry

The BICEPS Network (Boosting Initiatives for Collaborative Emission-reduction with the Power of Shippers) is a network of shippers and committed partners that aims to boost initiatives and create momentum for the implementation of sustainability solutions in the shipping sector by using the power of demand of shippers. 

DSGC members AkzoNobel, DSM and FrieslandCampina are founding members of the network and Shell LNG is a partner. The Network wants to reach impact in the reduction of CO2 emissions, sulphur and black carbon, the treatment of (on-board) waste, the biodiversity impact of ballast waterand the end-of-life cycle programs for vessels.

Joining the BICEPS Network allows us to collaborate with other shippers and jointly drive sustainability initiatives in the shipping industry: together we can do so much more.

FrieslandCampina is working on impact reduction in every step in our grass-to-glass supply chain to realize climate neutral growth. Our participation in the BICEPS-network is our means to also adding greener ocean shipping into our scope.

The shippers in the Network apply the BICEPS Rating System in order to select carriers for their shipment of goods. The Rating System qualifies the ocean freight carriers on their actual sustainability performance, using five relevant themes:

 1 – Publication of sustainability information
2 – Actual emission scores and targets
3 – Improvement projects, and project statuses
4 – Collaboration of the carrier with the outside world
5 – Long term horizon in relation to sustainability

Furthermore, the Network stimulates dialogue among shippers, carriers and chain partners, creates awareness of cleaner technologies and innovations, connects parties in order to leverage on best practices and supports innovations in challenging the 'market-fit'of their products and services and in matching with clients and investors for scaling.

We’re working with customers and suppliers all over the world in order to reduce our impact across the whole value chain. This partnership represents a valuable step towards improving the sustainability profile of a hugely significant sector within the whole sphere of global logistics.
