Human Cities

Human Cities - regenerating urban communities across the world

Human Cities is our commitment to improving, energizing and regenerating urban communities across the world. It is everything we do for and with society. It’s an active expression of our company purpose to create everyday essentials to make people’s lives more liveable and inspiring. Our cities are growing. Around 50 percent of the world’s population currently lives in cities. This is expected to increase to nearly 70 percent by 2020.

We help cities to meet the challenges they face by combining our sense of care with our people, products and leadership in innovation, safety and sustainability. Rapid urbanization means that one of the biggest challenges of our age will be how to keep our cities “human”. We want to make the world’s cities sustainable for all inhabitants.

We’re channelling our people, products and purpose in local communities around the globe. By using our three key strengths – essential ingredients, essential protection, essential color – we can energize communities, making them more liveable and inspiring. From revitalizing favelas in Brazil, to restoring historic landmarks and creating jobs for young people in the UK, we try to give back to the communities in which we operate, which we have been doing for many years through our Community Program.

Impact

Our Decorative Paints business in Brazil has launched an initiative called Unexpected Courts which involves using paint to create courts and spaces in surprising places, where children can play alternative sports such as basketball, volleyball, hockey and table tennis. It helps to energize communities, makes life more liveable and brings essential color to local neighborhoods. Also our work with the Cruyff Foundation is designed to support projects that make sport more accessible to children around the world. As one of their top partners and preferred paint supplier, we help the Foundation to create and maintain facilities in neighborhoods where children lack the possibility to play sports in a safe environment.

Lessons Learned

One of the biggest challenges of our age will be how to keep our cities “human”. As neighborhoods, villages and towns meld into megacities, how do we preserve the identity of people and places?
