Business & Sustainable Development CommissionSustainable development presents an enormous business opportunity
Sustainable development presents an enormous opportunity—if business can understand economic, social, and environmental challenges as future value drivers.
As disruptive innovations are breaking new ground and transforming business models in health, education, mobility, agriculture and energy, they are challenging the status quo of industries. The private sector needs to accelerate inclusive growth and drive sustainability at a far greater speed and scale than it has to date. The Business and Sustainable Development Commission, launched in January 2016, aims to accelerate this market transformation and advance the world’s transition to a more prosperous, sustainable economy, in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's).
The core of the Commission's mission is to make a powerful case - supported by sound evidence, rigorous research and compelling real-world examples - for why business leaders should seize upon sustainable development as the greatest opportunity of a lifetime. The Commission will show how the SDGs provide the private sector with a framework for achieving this market shift.
The Commission brings together international leaders from business, labour, financial institutions and civil society
There is no business case for enduring poverty. We have an opportunity to unlock trillions of dollars through new markets, investments and innovation, but to do so, we must challenge our current practices and address poverty, inequality and environmental challenges. Every business will benefit from operating in a more equitable, resilient world if we achieve the Sustainable Development Goals." (Paul Polman, CEO, Unilever)
The Business Commission’s flagship report, to be published in January 2017, will serve as the foundation from which a number of activities will be launched to inspire and mobilise a growing number of business leaders to align their companies with social and environmental impact.
